What to Expect on Stage

Quantum computing isn't sci-fi anymore, it's the next frontier of technology, and it's moving faster than anyone expected. Marianne will give you insights from the physics lab and research. What does it take to be ready for the quantum era? And most importantly: how can you contribute to it?

About

Marianne Etzelmüller Bathen is Associate Professor in the Section for Materials Physics and Quantum Technology at the University of Oslo. Her research focuses on defects in semiconductors, tiny flaws in the crystal structure that can either destroy or unlock the properties that make modern electronics possible. By learning to control these defects, her work supports better power electronics and, more importantly to her, the development of quantum technology. She is particularly interested in using point defects as quantum bits for sensing, communication and computing, with the goal of building a sustainable and scalable quantum platform for the future. Marianne holds a degree in nanotechnology from NTNU and completed her PhD in semiconductor physics at the University of Oslo in 2020. She then carried out postdoctoral research as an ETH Fellow at the Advanced Power Semiconductor Laboratory at ETH Zurich, completing her fellowship in 2023. She received H.M. The King's Gold Medal in 2020 and the ETH Fellowship in 2021.
